'मराल पक्षी' / The 'MARAAL PAKSHI' Sari

'मराल पक्षी' / The 'MARAAL PAKSHI' Sari

She wanted to belong, yet had a mind of her own. She liked doing things her way. There was nothing wrong with being selfish when it came to pursuing her own dreams and ambitions. She knew she was her own hero, yet she longed for one!
She was a flamingo in a flock of pigeons.

Hand batik mul cotton sari with 'maraal' (flamingo bird) motifs.

Batik is the art of decorating fabrics through dye resistance, wherein the designs are created by using specific parts of a fabric being exposed to the dye. After washing the fabric, it is pounded flat to get rid of the wrinkles. With precision, the design pattern is then drawn/traced using charcoal pencil and then it's covered in hot wax - a mixture of paraffin or beeswax. This is traditionally done using a 'canting' (a small pen-like copper tube). This wax prevents the design from being dyed the same colour as the rest of the fabric. After the cloth has dried, the resist is removed by boiling or scraping it. Thus the contrast between the dyed and undyed areas forms the pattern.

Although the technique originated from the island of Java in Indonesia, closer home West Bengal has further popularized this art form particularly in the eastern region of India.

Also, a sincere request to all - please note that these are handmade and not machine-made, so very slight smudges of paint/dye may have been left by the artist. Imperfectly perfect is what we choose to call this beauty of a saree that it is!

#ProTip - This soft and breezy mul cotton sari can easily be teamed with a black cotton blouse/crop top/skiwi/high-neck pullover. You can also use other darker shades like violet or earthy tones like grey, brown or moss green to pair it up. Use oxidized silver or copper jewellery to complete the look.
